Stainless steel is a standard material for exhaust systems. Sundry parts, such as flexible hoses and fasteners, can be found in the engine compartment, where corrosion resistance is paramount. Further potential lies in structural uses. Austenitic grades have unique mechanical properties which can make stainless steel components as light as their so-called "light-metal" counterparts. Their work-hardening characteristics can also be used to improve energy absorption. Addressed to automotive designers and OEMs, the section on "Automotive Applications" is mainly dedicated to innovation in structural applications.
